Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) Team Member Training
JUNE 7, 2021 — From May 25-27, the Emergency Response Division of OR&R conducted Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT) team member training for the U.S. Coast Guard National Strike Force and Sector Mobile’s Incident Management Division through both virtual classroom instruction and in-person field training on Gulf Islands National Seashore Pensacola Beach, Florida.
In total, twenty-six Coast Guard responders participated. Attendees were from the Gulf and Atlantic Strike Teams as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Sector Mobile’s Incident Management Division. This training was delayed for much of 2021 due to COVID restrictions and enables Strike Team members to meet critical qualifications needed for their Response Manager or Response Supervisor certifications.
The class was conducted virtually utilizing Department of Homeland Security’s Adobe Connect platform for two days followed by an intensive half day of field training where students applied techniques in a natural setting along Gulf Islands National Seashore. This enabled students an opportunity to explore a variety of shorelines and discuss potential impacts and cleanup considerations for oil spills affecting highly sensitive habitats, amenity beaches, and historic properties.
This learning experience is critical in helping advance training and increase oil spill readiness for U.S. Coast Guard responders at the local and national level.
