Public Meetings Provide Update on Huntington Beach, California Oil Spill and Solicit Ideas for Restoration Projects
JAN. 30, 2023 — Two virtual public meetings were held on Jan. 25, 2023, to inform the public about the status of the natural resource damage assessment being conducted for the Pipeline P00547 oil spill off of the coast of Huntington Beach, California. Restoration project ideas were also solicited.
On Oct. 1, 2021, the Pipeline P00547 (Huntington Beach) oil spill occurred in Southern California. An underwater pipeline running from Platform Elly to Long Beach spilled an estimated 25,000 gallons of crude oil into San Pedro Bay.
On Oct. 3, 2022, a factsheet was released inviting the public to submit restoration ideas or project proposals that aim to protect, restore, and enhance resources potentially impacted by the spill.
To build on the injury assessment factsheet and our invitation for restoration ideas, two virtual public information meetings occurred on Jan. 25 to share updated scientific results from the anniversary studies and the status of the natural resource damage assessment. The trustees addressed public questions about the timing of upcoming restoration, details about the release, including spill volume, and how climate change and coastal resilience may be factored into restoration decision-making.
All restoration project submissions will be evaluated during the preparation of a damage assessment and restoration plan.
