Public Meeting of the Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee

DECEMBER 21, 2020 — On December 15, the Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee (IMDCC) held a virtual public meeting focusing on marine debris monitoring and detection.

The IMDCC is a multi-agency body responsible for coordinating a comprehensive program of marine debris research and activities among federal agencies. Representatives meet to share information, assess and promote best management practices, and coordinate the Federal Government’s efforts to address marine debris.


During the open meeting, Nancy Wallace, Director of the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP), Hillary Burgess, MDP Monitoring Coordinator, and Steve Morrison, MDP International Activities & Partnerships, presented on the MDP’s Marine Debris Monitoring & Assessment Project, a project with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to develop a decision framework tool to assist in shoreline debris monitoring, and the MDP’s work with satellites, manned aircraft, and unmanned aerial systems, as well as other emerging technologies for marine debris detection. Grayson Shor, Foreign Affairs Officer with the Department of State’s Office of Ocean & Polar Affairs Marine Debris Team, presented on the Department of State’s current efforts around satellite monitoring of floating plastic marine debris.
