OR&R Volunteers at National Ocean Science Bowl

MAY 2, 2022 – This week two experts from OR&R’s Assessment and Restoration Division, Bryand Duke and Ken Finkelstein, participated in the 25th annual National Ocean Science Bowl.

As green turtle populations continue to recover globally, grazing by green turtles plays an important role in regulating the growth and productivity of seagrass meadows, including those at Buck Island (pictured). All work is conducted under proper permit. Image credit: NPS / Alexandra Gulick

The National Ocean Science Bowl tests high-school student’s marine science knowledge in a virtual competition.

Students took a deep dive into biology, chemistry, physics and geology, pushing them to greater academic heights and sparking interest and passion for the marine environment. OR&R experts participated as part of a team of mentors from NOAA and other top organizations to inspire students to pursue careers in marine science.

This was Ken Finkelstein’s 15th year participating in the National Science Bowl where he has been a judge, coach, and now a mentor. For more information on how to volunteer next year, please visit the National Ocean Science Bowl website.
