Her outdoor and childhood memories were shaped through cultural connections and place-based educational experiences, and led to a profound respect for and responsibility to the natural environment.

When Shanelle joined the NOAA Marine Debris Program in February 2018, she was excited about the opportunity to focus on ocean stewardship and address marine debris impacts in Hawai‘i and Pacific island territories. In her position she coordinates and conducts outreach and educational activities with school groups and the broader community. She aids communication efforts through the creation of newsletters, presentations, and outreach materials. Additionally, she provides support to the Program’s communications team and West Coast region.

When asked about what she enjoys most about her job, Shanelle notes the opportunities she has to engage with people from different communities across the Pacific and learn about how they uniquely experience and address marine debris. Additionally, she appreciates being a part of a dynamic team that supports one another in carrying out the Program’s mission.

Shanelle attended the University of Hawai‘i where she received a B.A. in Communications. She then received her MBA from Chaminade University. Prior to joining the NOAA Marine Debris Program, she worked in land conservation efforts in Hawai‘i, and in education providing project support and conducting community outreach. On her days off you can find her at the beach and spending time with family and friends.
