OR&R Lecture Series: Dr. Paul Panetta, Chief Scientist for OHMSETT

JULY 13, 2020 — One of the most efficient methods for removing an oil slick from the surface of the water (and one of the most exciting) is by burning it in place or “in-situ burning”.  It is a technique that is difficult to master and still holds many challenges for researchers.

On last Thursday’s edition of ORR’s weekly lecture series, YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW, Dr. Paul Panetta, the Chief Scientist for OHMSETT (the largest oil spill testing tank in the world) and the Principle Scientist for Applied Research Assoc., detailed his work in measuring burn efficiencies and slick thickness using both aerial and underwater ROVs.  The research was funded by DOI/Bur. Of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and involved the work of scientists from Canada, NOAA, Army Corps of Engineers, academia and ExxonMobil.  Such a cross section of mental horsepower is encouraging and necessary to solve these complex environmental problems.

Please join us next Thursday from 3:00pm – 5:00pm EDT at YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW for a very special two hour program focused on CORALS.  A panel of experts will discuss the threats they face, efforts to restore damaged reefs and hopeful work to regenerate corals around the world.  https://noaaorr.adobeconnect.com/orrlectureseries/
