OR&R and NGS Staff Attend NOAA’s Hurricane Awareness Tour

MAY 9, 2022 – On Tuesday, May 3, OR&R and National Geodetic Survey staff attended the kick off of NOAA’s Hurricane Awareness Tour at Ronald Reagan National Airport, engaging with congressional staffers, media, and NOAA leadership. OR&R and NGS each play a pivotal role in hurricane preparedness, response, and recovery, from emergency response after a hurricane, to shoreline mapping imagery that helps emergency managers recover quickly from storms.

The tour was spearheaded by the National Weather Service, and featured attendance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Air Force in addition to NOAA leadership, and multiple NOAA line offices. Attendees included OR&R Director Scott Lundgren, OR&R Disaster Preparedness Program Chief Kate Wheelock, NGS Remote Sensing Division Chief Mike Aslaksen and NGS Remote Sensing Division Deputy Chief LCDR Peter Freeman. NOAA hurricane hunters were also on site to feature the NGS NOAA King Air plane N68RF, which collects shoreline and emergency event imagery.

The tour continued on Wednesday, May 4 with emergency managers in attendance, before moving to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City for the final leg.
