NOS Supports FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) During Response
SEPTEMBER 21, 2020 — Recently, NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) virtually deployed staff to FEMA’s National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) to support ongoing response efforts for Hurricane Laura and Tropical Storm Marco.
FEMA’s NRCC is a multi-agency center that coordinates the overall Federal support for major incidents and emergencies. This is accomplished by bringing select federal agencies together, including liaisons from NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) and NOAA’s National Ocean Service (NOS) to coordinate information, resources, and planning more effectively.
Recently, NOS has taken on a new role within FEMA’s NRCC as a liaison. This position, currently being filled by Alyson Finn, from OR&R’s Disaster Preparedness Program (DPP), acts as a representative for NOS before, during, and after natural disasters such as hurricanes. This role is one of two NOAA representatives detailed to FEMA’s NRCC to coordinate NOAA’s preparedness and response activities during disasters. NOAA’s National Weather Service (NWS) also provides a similar role and maintains a full-time, NOAA liaison to FEMA.
As we navigate through the 2020 hurricane season, NOS will continue to fill the liaison role at the FEMA NRCC as needed.
