Marine Debris Program Presents at the U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco and Sector Delta Abandoned and Derelict Vessels Quarterly Meeting

JULY 25, 2022 — On July 13, 2022, NOAA Marine Debris Program California Regional CoordinatorChristy Kehoe and Southeast Regional Coordinator Sarah Latshaw presented at the United States Coast Guard Sector San Francisco and Sector Delta Abandoned and Derelict Vessels Quarterly Meeting. The meeting brought together more than 30 ADV experts from across the San Francisco and Sacramento Delta area in Northern California.

Christy provided an overview of the Marine Debris Program response and ADV work, including the recently published Rhode Island Marine Trades Association’s Feasibility of Derelict Vessel Recycling Guide, the Environmental Response Management Application, the Marine Debris Program’s ADV Infohub, and the Salvaging Solutions to Abandoned and Derelict Vessels webinar. She also highlighted opportunities to remove ADVs through Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding. 


Other presentations included Coast Guard updates on the American Challenger vessel removal, California State Lands Committee Delta Cleanup Fund, Delta Task Force Recap, and updates on recent ADV removals in the area. The Marine Debris Program looks forward to continuing to participate in these quarterly meetings to share any NOAA resources and opportunities to reduce ADV issues across California.
