Marine Debris Program Presents at Virtual Student and Career Fair
March 21, 2022 – On March 12, Christy Kehoe, California Regional Coordinator for the NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP), presented at the Ocean Institute's 2022 Virtual Marine and Environmental Sciences College and Career Fair. The event was attended by a national audience of college-bound students, along with their parents and counselors.
During the fair there were live presentations from diverse sectors and agencies, small session chats, student and alumni panels, and exhibits. The interactive day aimed to help inform and encourage students about post-high school, college, and career opportunities.
Christy led a session with 40 students to discuss her background and academic and career journey, as well as an overview of the MDP and her role as regional coordinator. She also discussed NOAA federal and contractual opportunities. Attendees learned about the MDP’s role as the federal lead to address marine debris and available NOAA resources, and Christy shared insights on the skills needed for her job.
Other speakers included California Congressman Mike Levi and filmographer Alison Teal, as well as universities and programs across the United States, including Mote Marine Laboratory, Ocean Exploration Trust, Delaware Department of Natural Resources, Heirs to Our Ocean, Surf Industry Members Association, and California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
