US-Russia Science Corner: Sharing About Major Fish Stocks and Commercial Fisheries
FEB. 7, 2022 — As we closed out the fully virtual 2022 Alaska Marine Science Symposium, the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) hosted a unique webinar, convening U.S. and Russian experts to share information on fish populations in our shared (and neighboring) seas.
This was part of a series of conversations between Russian and Alaskan colleagues, studying and observing coastal and marine ecosystems in the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, and Arctic Ocean. This session focused on fish and fisheries. As climate change continues to transform habitats and food webs in this region, the goal was to stimulate broader discussions about the need for more collaboration and identify opportunities to strengthen research and exchange of observations across the border.
English and Russian simultaneous interpretation was provided as the meeting occurred over a virtual platform. The meeting was attended by over 100 interested scientists from academia, non-governmental organizations, and local, state, and federal government agencies.
