Marine Debris Regional Collaboration Project Announced at Gulf of Maine Council Meeting
DEC. 20, 2021 — On Dec. 9, members of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment and its working group gathered virtually to share updates, review new work plans, and identify areas for collaboration.
A group of partners, representing Blue Ocean Society, Center for Coastal Studies, Huntsman Marine Science Centre, Surfrider Foundation, and Urban Harbors Institute presented their strategy to conduct marine debris cleanups and outreach events on both the American and Canadian coasts of the Gulf of Maine. Their efforts are supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s fiscal year 2021 North America Marine Debris Prevention and Removal grant competition.
Demi Fox, Northeast regional coordinator for the NOAA Marine Debris Program, presented on NOAA’s role in the project. She will remain closely involved in these activities through monthly meetings with the partners, assisting with outreach efforts, and tracking metrics that will be reported to stakeholders across the region.
Council and working group members were very excited to hear of the success in obtaining funding and look forward to upcoming presentations on progress being made across the Gulf of Maine.
