Marine Debris Program Coordinates Virtual Bi-Annual California Ocean Litter Strategy Webinar
NOVEMBER 22, 2021 -─ On November 10, NOAA’s Marine Debris Program (MDP) coordinated and presented at the virtual bi-annual California Ocean Litter Strategy (CA OLS) webinar. The webinar brought together over 45 partners across the state and included a diverse set of sectors including state agencies, nonprofits, private sector, and academia.
The MDP partnered with the California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) to develop the California Ocean Litter Prevention Strategy. The Strategy acts as a key document for the OPC marine pollution program’s work on ocean litter and plastic pollution. Twice a year, California’s marine debris action plan partners host a webinar to promote information sharing as well as hear from leading experts in California who are addressing marine debris.
MDP California Regional Coordinator Christy Kehoe and California Sea Grant Extension Fellow Tanya Torres organized the webinar and presented on the CA OLS background and November progress report updates to the CA OLS partners. Additional speakers from the California State Senate Ben Allen’s Office, UPSTREAM, EPA Region 9, Stand Up to Trash, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), California Sea Grant, Cabrillo College, California Product Stewardship Council, and Surfrider Foundation provided updates on actions and related projects. The next webinar will take place in spring or summer 2022.
