OR&R Participates in “GoMRI Contributions to Dispersant Science”

NOVEMBER 23, 2020 — During the week of November 16, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) hosted a virtual synthesis workshop titled “GoMRI Contributions to Dispersant Science.”

GoMRI began in 2010, shortly after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, when BP announced a commitment of up to $500 million over 10 years to fund an independent research program designed to study the impact of the oil spill and its associated response on the environment and public health in the Gulf of Mexico.  As the research effort is concluding, the focus of the program has shifted to synthesis and legacy efforts. The goal of the recent workshop was to summarize and synthesize research on dispersants and inform future R&D.  Several OR&R staff attended and were invited speakers. OR&R Scientific Support Coordinator Paige Doelling spoke on the role of dispersants in response and Regional Operations Manager Doug Helton spoke on dispersant use in frontier (Arctic) areas.
