Marine Debris Program Meets with Congressional Staff in Mississippi

MARCH 9, 2020 — On February 24, Caitlin Wessel, Gulf of Mexico Regional Coordinator for the Marine Debris Program, met with Congressional staff from the district offices of Senator Hyde-Smith and Senator Wicker.

Caitlin provided an introduction to the Marine Debris Program (MDP), and then walked through each of the projects funded by the MDP in Mississippi, including the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, Plastic-Free Gulf Coast, and the Pearl River log jam project. Most recently, two funded partners teamed up to form the Cleanup Krewe and created a float to participate in the Gulf Coast Carnival Association parade in Biloxi on February 25th, picking up trash at the end of the parade.

Caitlin also provided a review of the Mississippi Marine Debris Emergency Response Guide, and both offices were very interested to share the Guide with local stakeholders.
