NESDIS, OR&R Collaborate on Training Prior to the Clean Gulf Scientific Conference

NOVEMBER 12, 2019 — In advance of the Clean Gulf Scientific Conference, the NOAA Satellite and Information Service (NESDIS) and OR&R collaborated to provide training on their products and services regarding marine oil pollution.

The audience consisted of more than 40 in-person staff from the Department of the Interior (DOI) Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), as well as additional attendees who remotely participated. The training was held at the BSEE New Orleans District Office.

Ellen Ramirez, Deputy Chief of the Satellite Analysis Branch (NESDIS | SAB) provided training on satellite based detection and characterization of oil in the marine environment, and an overview of the Marine Pollution Surveillance Report (MPSR) product, including the dissemination procedure and how to access the information. These reports are routinely available to the response community for awareness and enforcement of potential accidental and/or illegal discharges, and they're also provided for modeling support to OR&R scientists.

George Graettinger, Senior GIS Project Specialist in the Spatial Data Branch (SDB) provided training on the OR&R Gulf of Mexico ERMA Common Operational Picture (COP).  ERMA is one of the primary delivery portals for the NESDIS MPSR products and ERMA leverages the MPSRs in addition to hundreds of environmental data layers for monitoring and discovery of potential exposure pathways to natural resources for oil releases to the environment.

This cooperative training provided staff with data and tools to facilitate BSEE’s monitoring and enforcement mission. BSEE requested this training for their inspectors and staff in the New Orleans regional office as well as from the DC area.
