NYC Students Take a Scientific Snapshot at “Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor” Event
OCTOBER 28, 2019 —OR&R joined the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and public school teachers and students in Brooklyn, New York, on October 22 for the annual Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor event.
Each fall, thousands of students from Troy to the New York Harbor collect data at numerous locations along the river and in the harbor and share the information on the web so they can understand how the "snapshot" they collected fits into the whole estuary. In Brooklyn, students made measurements of basic water quality parameters, estimated current velocity and direction, trawled for microplastics, and investigated aquatic life including oysters and fish. The students were excited to learn that some of their findings will be used in local research projects and that most of the data they generated on this day will be incorporated into the larger picture of the river and harbor.
