NOAA 2020 Science Camp in Seattle Canceled

MAY 4, 2020 — After thoughtful and extensive deliberation, NOAA and Washington Sea Grant made the difficult decision to cancel this year's NOAA Science Camp program.

Given the uncertain status of Washington’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy order in the coming months, and out of an abundance of caution, we have suspended all in-person camp programming for our summer season.  Recognizing the importance of keeping kids engaged in STEAM activities, NOAA scientists and Washington Sea Grant staff are actively pursuing the development of virtual opportunities to help keep kids engaged with NOAA this summer.

NOAA Science Camp is normally held every summer on the NOAA Western Regional Campus in Seattle, WA.  NOAA Science Camp is a week-long day camp that offers hands-on science learning opportunities to middle and high school students.  Campers are exposed to a wide cross-section of NOAA offices, scientists, and missions through hands-on activities emphasizing solutions to real-world problems. During the week, campers may participate in the following activities:

  • Try on SCUBA diving gear and simulate a dive in a hyperbaric chamber
  • Identify different marine mammals by looking at tags and skulls
  • Analyze water samples and see how buoys help predict large-scale climate events
  • Learn to use marine navigation charts and practice charting skills
  • Learn about hazardous substances and respond to a hypothetical spill
  • Interact with NOAA scientists
