New West Coast Oil Spill Data

JUNE 28, 2021 ─ The Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force—an organization comprised of representatives from state and provincial environmental agencies in the Pacific coastal area—collects and shares data on oil spills, coordinates oil spill prevention projects, and promote regulatory safeguards to improve prevention, preparation, and response to oil spills on a state and provincial level.

The Task Force has recently published updated oil spill statistics for the region: Summary of West Coast Oil Spill Data, Calendar Year 2020.

Sharing the data with regional stakeholders, Task Force Executive Coordinator Sarah Brace explained: “Since 2003, the Task Force has been tracking spills of 42 gallons and larger of crude and non-crude products, both marine and inland. Beginning in 2016, we began tracking the number of small spills (fewer than 42 gallons). This year, for the first time, we are pleased to include data from British Columbia in our report.”

The 24-page report notes trends in the number of spills and the volume released, and summarizes the data by oil type and by spill source, size, and cause.
