More than 40 International Journalists Learn About Marine Debris
JULY 24, 2023 — On July 18, Nancy Wallace, Director of the NOAA Marine Debris Program, participated in a virtual workshop organized by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network as part of its Ocean Media Initiative.
The workshop connected more than 40 journalists from across the world with thematic experts on marine pollution to improve their understanding of the sources and impacts of marine pollution and the governance and regulatory measures aimed at curbing them, both at the national and international level. The workshop was developed to build the capacity of local journalists and media outlets to effectively report on the issues.
Nancy provided an overview of the source and impacts of marine debris, the activities of the NOAA Marine Debris Program, ways to help reduce and mitigate marine debris, and insights on specific story angles that remain under-reported in the media.
