MAY 25, 2020 — On May 15, the OR&R’s Marine Debris Program California Regional Coordinator, Sherry Lippiatt, and California Sea Grant Extension Fellow, Tanya Torres, participated in a virtual California Water Quality Monitoring Council / Trash Monitoring Workgroup meeting.

The Trash Monitoring Workgroup was formed last year with a mission to support current practices and advances in trash monitoring and the development of data analysis and visualization tools aimed at assessing the effectiveness of policies and practices for limiting the amounts of trash in the environment. Workgroup participants represent all levels of government, industry, academia, and the non-profit community.

Sherry serves as the co-chair of the workgroup's Citizen Science Subcommittee, which seeks to provide tools and resources to volunteer trash monitoring groups and facilitate the submission of volunteer-collected trash monitoring data to California's Environmental Data Exchange Network (CEDEN). The workgroup is looking forward to testing the submission of trash data to CEDEN during a virtual "Trash Datathon" that will be hosted by CA's State Water Quality Control Board in Fall 2020.
