Marine Debris Program Presents at Virtual Long Island Sound Marine Debris Action Plan Workshop
March 1, 2021 — On February 17, the Marine Debris Program Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Coordinators Demi Fox and Christy Kehoe participated in the first virtual workshop to create the Long Island Sound Marine Debris Action Plan (MDAP).
Demi and Christy are part of a regional team of partners led by the New York and Connecticut Sea Grant Offices. The MDAP development process is funded by the National Sea Grant Office, in partnership with the NOAA Marine Debris Program. To kick off the meeting, Demi and Christy provided presentations on the process for drafting the Gulf of Maine Marine Debris Action Plan, published in November 2019, and the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Marine Debris Action Plan, which is set for release later this year.
The new Long Island Sound MDAP will coordinate stakeholders in state and local governments, academia, non-profit organizations, and industry. The purpose of the first workshop was to designate several Working Groups that will develop objectives, strategies, and actions to help prevent, remove, and study marine debris in Long Island Sound. The Long Island Sound marine debris community will continue these discussions throughout the upcoming year.
