More than 25 students attended the Marine Debris Program’s session, where they learned about the problem of marine debris as well as ways to effectively communicate solutions to the issue. Students explored marine debris monitoring data, reflected on personal waste assessments, and practiced sharing important messages about marine debris prevention through interactive games and discussion. Following the session, all student respondents shared with the organizers that they had a better understanding of the marine debris problem and ways they can help solve it. 

Joined by Katie Morgan, the Marine Debris Program’s Mid-Atlantic regional coordinator, Alexandria also presented at the 2022 National Marine Educators Association Conference. Educators attended “Charting a Course to a Sea Free of Debris: Youth Marine Debris Action Planning” both virtually and in person. They learned strategies for presenting background knowledge on marine debris and action planning efforts, using the recently published Long Island Sound Marine Debris Action Plan as an example. Workshop participants discussed resources and opportunities to engage students in action projects based on action plan goals, as well as creating individualized action plans with student leadership. 

The Marine Debris Program looks forward to continuing to advance the ways we can work with teachers and inspire students in virtual and hybrid environments.
