Marine Debris Program Meets with Foreign Journalists from Indo-Pacific Region

AUGUST 19, 2019 — On August 8, the NOAA Marine Debris Program’s Director, Nancy Wallace, spoke to a group of seven foreign journalists from Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia during a State Department-sponsored reporting tour covering American policy topics: "The U.S. Vision for the Indo-Pacific Region.”

One of the topics covered in the tour was marine debris, especially in light of actions by governments in Southeast Asia. Nancy provided an overview of the issue of marine debris from a national and global perspective and discussed how NOAA’s program works to better understand marine debris and address it through program activities. MaryLee Haughwout and Steve Morrison from the Marine Debris Program also participated and answered the journalists' questions. Areas of interest included best practices for emergency response, citizen science initiatives, and recommendations for foreign government actions to address marine debris. Following the reporting tour, the journalists are expected to publish stories on topics covered in the briefings.
