The workshop covered an introduction to behavior design and the human-centered design process, the use of determinants analysis to identify factors that motivate or deter a target audience from taking a specific action, and the Root Solutions Behavioral Building BlocksTM to develop effective interventions to prevent marine debris. Participants worked in small groups to scope campaigns to reduce illegal dumping, prevent the loss of monofilament fishing line, reduce single-use plastics in food service, and encourage consumers to bring their own reusable cutlery when dining out. Root Solutions is currently working with MDP grantees in California to develop behavior change projects related to cigarette butt litter (Surfrider San Francisco) and shotgun wads (Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary). The training was supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation.
