Marine Debris Program Coordinates Strategic Action Planning in the Great Lakes
SEPTEMBER 23, 2019 — On August 28 and 29, the Great Lakes Marine Debris Community met in Toledo, Ohio to discuss progress to date on addressing marine debris in the Great Lakes region.
Academics, non-governmental organizations, federal, state/provincial, and local governments from both the United States and Canada reviewed the completed Great Lakes Land-based Marine Debris Action Plan (2014-2019), and worked to develop a new draft action plan that will guide efforts for the next five years. The new action plan will build upon previous initiatives to see the Great Lakes free from the impacts of marine debris. Working groups are targeting debris efforts in four focus areas: Research, Policy and Management, Prevention, and Removal. The new action plan will be released in the next few months.
