Marine Debris Program Chief Scientist Celebrates Twenty Years with NOAA
APRIL 20, 2020 — On April 10, Dr. Amy V. Uhrin, Chief Scientist for the NOAA Marine Debris Program, celebrated her 20th anniversary of working for NOAA.
In 2000, Amy started as a Biological Science Technician at NCCOS’ Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research in Beaufort, NC and was promoted to Research Ecologist in 2004. For 15 years at NCCOS she conducted research on seagrass ecosystems and derelict fishing gear impacts to submerged habitats. In 2015, Amy left NCCOS to join OR&R.
As Chief Scientist for the MDP, Amy is responsible for developing and implementing MDP’s Strategic Research Plan, and overseeing MDP’s diverse research portfolio. She has served on several national and international expert working groups about plastic pollution and is regularly asked to provide scientific input and support to a number of national and international agencies and intergovernmental organizations.
During her time with NOAA, Amy has most enjoyed leading numerous field projects, participating in a dozen research cruises, diving over amazing underwater habitats, and traveling both near and far (13 different countries).
