$40M Recovered from Polluters for Restoration in Three States

Good news for a new year! OR&R and partners recovered $40 million from polluters in 2024 that will fund restoration of waterways and their habitats following oil spill and industrial pollution incidents in New Jersey, Texas, and Washington. These restoration efforts will benefit fish, wildlife, and communities disproportionately impacted by pollution. NOAA and its partners assessed the impacts of these incidents and reached legal settlements with those responsible to fund restoration. In a recent NOS video message, Paul Scholz, NOS deputy assistant administrator for ocean services and coastal zone management, shares the news.

Drift Card Used to Track 1976 Oil Spill Found – 48 Years Later

A plastic drift card released on December 27, 1976 near Nantucket, Massachusetts was found 3,000 miles away and 48 years later on the Isle of Coll in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The story of this card, used in response to the Argo Merchant oil spill, is a small time capsule and reminder of one of the major spills in U.S. waters that set the foundation for NOAA's pollution response work today.
