Gulf of Maine Council Meeting Spotlights Marine Debris Removal

JUNE 24, 2024 — On June 11, the NOAA  Marine Debris Program’s Northeast Regional Coordinator, Demi Fox, attended a Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment meeting in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts to support a presentation on the final metrics of a Marine Debris Program-funded prevention and removal effort that recently concluded work in Canada and the United States.

The Gulf of Maine Association, a group that included Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation, Urban Harbors Institute, Surfrider Foundation, Center for Coastal Studies, the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, and several other partners, coordinated across the Gulf of Maine region to clean up shorelines, collect data, and share information. At the close of their MDP-funded project, the Association conducted more than 500 cleanups, removed nearly 48,000 pounds of debris, and engaged over 13,000 youth and adults in informal education programs. The group continues to collaborate across the international border as several new projects get underway.
