From Ghost Ships to Adventures in Wind Engineering, You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know

March 29, 2021 — Last week, during the You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know Lecture we took a deep dive into the history of Mallows Bay and the ghost ship fleet with Maryland’s State Underwater Archeologist, Dr. Susan Langley.

We were taken back to World War I when ships were desperately in need. To meet this need, it was decided (somewhat controversially) to build a fleet of wooden hulled vessels that became immediately obsolete after the war. Dr. Langley took us through the history of these vessels that came to rest in Mallows Bay.  This lecture was a good reminder that historical and ecological treasures often live right under the water's surface. It is important to work closely with the State Historic Preservation Office during a response and wise to build a relationship with them before an incident to know who to contact when a resource might be at risk.

For our next lecture, we are moving “back to the future” to learn how state of the art technology is being used to help answer questions about resilience in the face of hurricane force winds.  We are excited to hear about adventures in wind engineering with Dr. Forrest Masters from the University of Florida on April 15 at 3:00 pm ET. We hope you can join us.
