Disaster Preparedness Program Attends the Pacific Risk Management O’hana Conference

APRIL 6, 2020 — Autumn Lotze, Natural Resource and Community Recovery Specialist, and Genwest contractor, recently participated in the Pacific Risk Management ‘Ohana Conference (PRiMO) on behalf of the Disaster Preparedness Program (DPP).

PRiMO’s membership is a diverse array of more than 100 agencies and organizations who collaborate to develop and implement action plans that improve resilience in the vast Pacific region.

Hosted in Honolulu, Hawaii, from March 10-13, this year’s conference--”Building a Resilient Pacific”--brought together government officials, community leaders, researchers and risk managers from around the Pacific Basin to discuss ongoing initiatives, learn from each other, and explore solutions that leverage scientific and technological advances and reflect cultural and traditional knowledge in order to better prepare the region for future risks. These ranged from strategies to address over-tourism to applying new technologies for damage assessment to the use of natural and nature-based infrastructure for risk mitigation.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity for the DPP to build new connections with stakeholders leading resilience and pre-disaster recovery planning for the Pacific Island communities they serve, setting the stage for future collaboration to reduce disaster risks and impacts.
