Director and Chief Scientist Share NOAA Advances at Annual Meeting of Spill Control Association of America
MAY 16, 2022 – From April 27-28, 2022, the NOAA OR&R Director Scott Lundgren and Senior Scientist Lisa DiPinto participated in the Annual Meeting of the Spill Control Association of America (SCAA) held in Savannah, Georgia.
The Association serves as the voice of the spill response community, representing spill response contractors, manufacturers, distributors, consultants, instructors, training institutions, and corporations working in this industry. OR&R participated in two panels to update the organization’s membership on advances NOAA has made in the products and services related to the spill response and restoration part of OR&R’s mission, and to hear about the work of this industry sector and other panelists.
Scott spoke on a Government Panel and provided a refresher on the office mission, accomplishments, and staff changes. He spoke to recent incident metrics and used OR&R’s support services provided to spills in California and support to Peru to highlight advances and applications of NOAA’s tools and services, including:
- Environmental Response Management Application and application of a dashboard to track shoreline oiling assessments and status through to cleanup completion
- Job Aid for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems in spill response
- Application of NOAA Satellite remote sensing used for oil detection
- Direct initialization of the WebGNOME spill model from remotely sensed data
Lisa presented on a Technology Advancement Panel on a range of research and methods development, with a focus on comparing advances in estimating and measuring oil slick thickness, and related work in ice environments.
