Cape May, NJ, Harborside Chat Features NOAA-Led Discussion on Abandoned and Derelict Vessels

MARCH 6, 2023 — Last month, staff from NOAA's Marine Debris Program, within the Office of Response and Restoration, spoke about the issue of abandoned and derelict vessels at a public event in Cape May, New Jersey.

The talk was part of the Nature Center of Cape May’s “Harborside Chat” series that covers a range of topics relevant to the Cape May community, which has seen many abandoned and derelict vessels in its harbor over the years. The presentation focused on providing context for attendees around the various challenges that can arise when dealing with the issue of abandoned and derelict vessels, such as limited funding availability, limited disposal options, questions around authority and jurisdiction for removals, lack of comprehensive data, and more.

The presentation also highlighted various resources available from the NOAA Marine Debris Program, including an overview of grant funding opportunities, the Salvaging Solutions webinar series, and more.
