Science is Cool: Honolulu NOAA Staff Engage Students in STEAM
FEB. 27, 2023 — On Feb. 7, NOAA staff joined a group of other local organizations in a night of learning and exploration with students and families at Kapolei Elementary’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) night.
Team members from NOAA Fisheries, Office of National Marine Sanctuaries Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, and the Marine Debris Program, within the Office of Response and Restoration, provided information on the work we do, hands-on activities, and engaging discussion with event participants from kindergarten through fifth grade.
Marine Debris Program staff shared samples of marine debris and provided pocket microscopes for students to analyze microplastics. Students were then guided through thinking about what they observed and, wondered, and what ideas they might have for preventing the issue of marine debris. In total, over 178 students and family members attended the event. Engaging our communities in science, service, and stewardship opportunities can support communities in ocean inquiry, connection, and conservation, including marine debris prevention.
