OR&R Tools and Data Standards at NOAA’s Environmental Data Management Workshop

SEPTEMBER 16, 2019 — OR&R participated in NOAA’s Environmental Data Management workshop held in Seattle, Washington on September 4-5.

Nearly 200 staff from across all NOAA Line Offices attended and participated in focus data discussions. The workshop also featured speakers from across NOAA, the Department of Commerce, Office of Management and Budget, partner science agencies, Industry, and the Earth Science Information Program (ESIP). This year’s workshop theme was "Unleashing NOAA’s Data as a Strategic Asset for Science, Service, Stewardship and Innovation," and each of OR&R’s presentations covered different aspects of this focus.

Presentations from OR&R included details and highlights of how we collect, manage, display and distribute data in support of our work. George Graettinger presented on the development of OR&R specifications for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) data collection and delivery during response and restoration efforts. Ben Shorr presented on the DIVER (Data Integration Visualization Export and Reporting) system and the implementation of data services (ERDDAP - developed by NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center) that provide more than 50 million environmental data records as a machine readable web service. Graettinger also presented on behalf of Jay Coady and gave an overview of the Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA) and its uses as a Common Operational Picture during disasters like Hurricane Dorian, as well as ERMA’s critical role in data management and data sharing.

The annual Environmental Data Management workshop engages a diverse set of NOAA staff to exchange ideas and best practices for data management and helps to innovate data sharing and leverage our data and tools to better NOAA’s scientific mission.
