Marine Debris Program Promotes Collaboration across the West Coast States
MAY 28, 2019 — On May 16, the Marine Debris Program's Pacific Northwest and California Regional Coordinators, Nir Barnea and Sherry Lippiatt, contributed to a webinar "Current Actions of the U.S. West Coast Marine Debris Plans," hosted by OCTO and the West Coast Marine Debris Alliance.
The goal of the webinar was to share information on marine debris initiatives across the West Coast states, and provided an update on the implementation of marine debris action plans within the states of Washington, Oregon, and California.
Nir provided an overview and summary of the marine debris action plans for Washington and Oregon, while Sherry summarized the California Ocean Litter Prevention Strategy. They spoke about engaging stakeholders to create the action plans, the intent to improve collaboration and galvanize action to address marine debris, and implementation to-date. The webinar also included presentations from action plan partners in the three states, including The Nature Conservancy, the Surfrider Foundation, and the California State University System. The webinar was attended by 130 participants, who contributed to an engaging question and answer session.
