On April 22, the Marine Debris Program’s Northeast Regional Coordinator, Demi Fox, spoke at the New Hampshire Coastal Marine Natural Resources and Environment Commission’s monthly meeting.
The Commission consists of State Representatives, fishermen, oyster farmers, professors, and leaders from non-profit organizations. Together, they focus on emerging environmental threats in coastal and Great Bay waters, including ocean acidification, nutrient loading, and over the past several months, marine debris.
Demi provided an overview of projects the Marine Debris Program is currently funding in the Northeast Region, as well as the draft Gulf of Maine Marine Debris Action Plan, which aims to coordinate efforts to prevent, research, and remove marine debris, work the Committee members were especially interested in furthering. Members also discussed methods to enhance their respective organizations’ reach to students and how educational activities could help clean up New Hampshire’s coastline.
Demi is looking forward to assisting this group as they further explore contributing to marine debris-centered initiatives.
