Coast Guard Commends Two OR&R Scientific Support Coordinators
FEB. 6, 2023 — The U.S. Coast Guard has recognized two OR&R Scientific Support Coordinators — CDR Faith Knighton and LTJG Kyle Vincent — with a Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation for their involvement in the incident management team for the recovery of the F/V Aleutian Isle.
The Aleutian Isle sank just off the coast of San Juan Island, Washington, on Aug. 13, 2022, containing 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel. The sinking occurred near a common transit route of the federally endangered Southern Resident killer whale, and a full-scale incident response was launched with local, state, federal, and international involvement.
The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard presented the commendation for:
“... exceptionally meritorious service from 13 August 2022 to 26 September 2022 while serving on the Aleutian Isle Incident Management Team. As part of the Unified Command for a Type Two incident, the team expertly coordinated marine environmental protection and marine safety operations for 45 consecutive days, culminating in the safe and successful recovery of the fishing vessel ALEUTIAN ISLE while minimizing impact to the environment, culturally sensitive areas, and other protected resources.”
The commendation concludes by stating:
“The dedication, pride and professionalism displayed by the Aleutian Isle Incident Management Team are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Coast Guard.”
